Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
Many pregnant women are under the impression that you cannot receive bodywork care during this time period. This could not be further from the truth!
During pregnancy women will physically go through many changes physically within the body. One of the changes that is left unspoken of is what happens to the spine as pregnancy progresses. As your kiddo grows within the womb your spine becomes forced out of place.
The first place is the lumbar or lower back. As your child continues to grow, they will push the bones of your lower back progressively more forward. This causes what we call a swayback posture. This is the biggest reason expecting mothers begin to experience low back pain. Soon after, constant neck pain and headaches will many times follow the low back pain. These headaches are caused by the body being pulled forward as the tummy and breasts become heavier. Your body is intelligent and thus will spasm the muscles of your back and neck in order to attempt to lean your body backwards.
Sadly, this is a losing battle. The muscles will become chronically tight and headaches and back pain will continue to become more frequent.

When this collapse occurs the ribs will push into the stomach, forcing its contents up the esophagus; causing reflux. Once we begin to correct the forward posture, the pressure on the stomach will decrease leading to a decrease/elimination of the reflux.
Secondly, this forward posture also creates pressure on the lungs as well. The further forward you go, the more pressure the ribcage will have on your lungs. This will not allow for the proper expansion and contraction which will lead to shortness of breath.
