Functional & Holistic Nutrition Therapy in Surprise, AZ
At our office we practice what is called functional nutrition. It is a completely different way to look at the human body and illness. Here is how it works:
1. We order and analyze several types of tests; blood, urinalysis, and more.
2. Observe negative trends/patterns in this testing.
3. Correlate your history and symptoms.
4. Support the body with time tested herbs, vitamins, minerals, etc.
The idea is to notice that an individual is trending towards the development of a disease in the future and to nip it in the bud instead of waiting for the disease to develop. Many patients who have symptoms seek help but are told they are “normal” or “it’s all in their head”. This is because most doctors who read labs are looking for numbers that indicate a disease, not suboptimal function. Many patients ask how do these issues begin? There are a lot of factors at play.
Clinical Dysfunctions

Other Factors That Impact Your Functional Nutrition Analysis
- Environmental: Pollution in the air, water, and the food we eat. Many chemicals plague our food and air supply these days. Everything from herbicides, pesticides, smog/car emissions, cell phone radiation, nuclear radiation, and much more! Many of these chemicals accumulate and are stored into the body which causes damage and dysfunction.
- Emotional: Many patients have had major traumas in their past that can manifest into physical symptoms. There is a reason why they have sayings like “you are a pain in the butt” or “I have butterflies in my stomach”. These are perfect examples of emotions having influence on physical symptoms.
- Dietary: Today we live in a world that revolves around convenience. Fast food and fast casual dining is running rampant in modern times. Many people are eating foods that are highly processed and full of trans fats, sugar, and added chemical preservatives and flavorings. People eating the typical “American” diet tend to be overweight, sick, and reliant on far too many medications.
- Pharmaceutical: The U.S pharmaceutical industry is the largest in the world. Our citizens purchase and consume more drugs than any other country in the world. People assumes this must mean we have the best health. Unfortunately, we rank very low on overall health compared to many other countries all over the world who spend far less on drugs. Many times, in healthcare today, the solution is to block a symptom using a drug instead of taking the time to get to the root-cause of the issue.
Almost every major disease or chronic condition has some origin in the causes above. Everything from thyroid disorders, digestive issues, painful joints, neurodevelopmental disorders, autoimmune conditions, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and much more!

How does functional nutrition work?
The idea is to notice that an individual is trending towards the development of a disease in the future and to nip it in the bud instead of waiting for the disease to develop. Many patients who have symptoms seek help but are told they are “normal” or “it’s all in their head”. This is because most doctors who read labs are looking for numbers that indicate a disease, not suboptimal function.
Here is the step by step process for a typical patient:
- Schedule a consultation and discuss the different symptoms you are experiencing along with the goals you’d like to achieve in the program.
- We will order the appropriate lab work to be completed.
- We will analyze your blood work and create an in-depth analysis and plan to address the issues we found.
- A follow-up appointment to go over the results and the plan. We will then also ship you all the supplements you need to take for the entire plan, split into segments or “phases”.
- Patient then begins the program once the supplements have arrived.
- We will have a follow-up appointment at around 1.5 months out and 3 months out to help guide you through the process and continue to answer any questions.
- After the program is completed new bloodwork will be ordered and adjustments will be made for future work.
What do your typical results look like?
Our average patients typically notice a significant improvement in the symptoms they are experiencing within a few short months. Things like better energy, less pain, weight loss, better skin/hair/nail quality, better digestion, and more. One of the most important factors for better results is patient compliance to the program. The better the patient follows instructions and makes the changes we ask them to implement the better their results will be. Our main goal is to get the patient healthy enough to live a life with very little pain, without drugs, and give them the ability to fully express their full human potential. Here is a perfect example:
We had a patient present to the office with a multitude of symptoms and medications. They were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic urinary tract infections. The medical doctor put this patient on several heart medications to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, insulin to lower blood sugars, and permanent antibiotics to fight the urinary tract infections.
Here is the problem; at what point did we ask why is this patient experiencing all these things? All the drugs the patient was put on were to treat the symptoms, but not identify the root cause. Plus, putting a patient on long-term antibiotics ended up causing an entirely new set of problems we will talk about in a second.
So, what did we find on their blood work? We found the things we knew we would find first.
- High blood sugar/HbA1C
But we identified many things functionally that were a big root cause issue of her symptoms.
- A parasitic infection
- LOW cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL
- B9/B12 deficiency trending to anemia
- Suboptimal kidney function/damage trending to kidney disease
- Chronic kidney infection unaffected by the antibiotics
- Iron deficiency trending to anemia
So, what did we now learn? 1. The cholesterol lowering drugs were making her fats too low which was affecting her hormones because you need adequate cholesterol to make all sex hormones. 2. We needed to change her to a low carb/sugar diet to properly lower her blood sugars to normal. 3. We had to give her herbs to kill off the parasitic infection to clear that out. 3. Detox her kidneys and give them the nutrients and herbs that will heal them and kill the chronic infection. 4. Supplement her with iron and B9/B12 to correct her deficiencies.
What was the result? The patient now feels more energy than they have in years, they no longer get winded getting up and down the stairs, their bloodwork is normalizing, and they are no longer on several of the medications they were taking.
You can see the deep impact you can have by identifying the root cause of an issue instead of treating the symptoms.
What types of dietary supplements do you use?
Many patients ask how we pick the supplements that we recommend? This is a great question. Each supplement in a “phase” is selected for a specific purpose. On the most basic level we may suggest a specific supplement because your bloodwork showed that you lacked it. Example: bloodwork shows a zinc deficiency; hence we will send a zinc supplement to you in your plan. On a more complex level, we may notice on your bloodwork that you have a congested liver and have a thyroid issue. We then will have a supplement to detoxify the liver which may very well completely resolve the thyroid problem. This is one of the wonderful things about functional nutrition, we recognize that organs rely upon one another to function. This is one of the main reasons why healthcare today doesn’t find a patient’s root cause to their health problems. They are constantly separating the body into pieces as though they are all disconnected.

MY STORY
Dr. Bain is a Minnesota-based chiropractor with a passion for helping others, from relieving the back pain of his patients to mentoring other chiropractors and physical therapists. He holds a chiropractic doctorate from Northwestern Health Sciences University and a Bachelor’s in Kinesiology from California State University Fullerton, among others.
I got sick over 7 years ago with an unknown illness. I went to over 20 specialists, took 6 months off from college, lost friends, and went into a deep depression. Why? Because out of 20 specialists nobody knew what was wrong with me. They all told me “it’s all in your head”, “Your bloodwork is normal”. Sound familiar to you? I was exhausted, had full body tremors, nausea, reflux, stomach pain, neurological symptoms, and more. I had two abnormal brain MRIs where I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and told to begin injection treatments immediately. I knew that what I was being told wasn’t right. Fast forward to chiropractic College I had given up on trying to figure out the issue. I continued to suffer with the symptoms throughout school but ignored them since I was told I was “normal”. By the end of my schooling I heard about functional nutrition from a friend and started to teach myself all about it. One of my breaks in between trimesters I went on a weekend vacation with my dad. We spent the weekend poolside with pina coladas which are rich in coconut oil and pineapple. These are important details for what comes next. I started to feel awful again. It felt like an aggravation of my symptoms. When I flew home the next day I went to the bathroom and passed a 2.5-inch piece of a liver parasite. And yes, I said a piece, not a whole one. With my functional nutrition background I immediately knew what it was and went on an herbal protocol to give my guests a swift goodbye!
I never traveled outside the country but what I did have was a long history of antibiotic use since childhood. Antibiotics destroy the stomach and intestinal lining, weaken the immune system, and destroy your good gut bacteria. This created an ideal environment for parasites to take hold along with candida yeast that came with it. I am still in the process to this day of fixing the years of damage to my body, but I found my answer. Therefore, we listen to every patient and consider every detail important. You will never hear us say the words “its all in your head”.
